New Haven County, Connecticut's third most populous county, was formed in 1666 but its final boundary was not settled until 1807. It is bordered on the northwest by Litchfield County, on the north by Hartford County, on the east by Middlesex County, and on the west by Fairfield County. Its southern border is Long Island Sound, where it shares a water boundary with Suffolk County in New York State. New Haven County has seven cities, 19 towns, and the consolidated Town and Borough of Naugatuck. The most populous city is New Haven, with 129,779 residents. Like all counties in Connecticut, New Haven County has no government. County governments were abolished in 1960 and their functions transferred to state, city, and town agencies. Today, counties in Connecticut exist as geographic and statistical entities.
