Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is most often associated with mapping and provides geographic information through maps or databases. GIS combines hardware, software and data to provide visual geographic information. A number of states and counties provide GIS maps online for free whereby one can view extensive data about the selected area. Furthermore, GIS databases are also being used by states and counties to integrate this geographic information with other database information such as property assessment records. Thus searching for a property's assessment information on a GIS database will not only return the assessment data, but will also provide visual geographic information as well.
Other states and counties have GIS programs in place whereby the consumer must pay to view or access this information. Still other areas of the country are only in the beginning stages of these programs and little GIS information currently exists.
