Formed in 1844 from part of Gloucester County. Camden County was named for Charles Pratt, 1st Earl Camden, an English judge and champion of civil liberties. Camden County is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area and hosts two cities, 27 boroughs, and 8 townships. Camden, the largest city, is also the county seat. It is uniformly flat, with elevations ranging from sea level at the Delaware River to 219 feet. Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania is directly across the Delaware River to the northwest. Adjoining New Jersey counties include Burlington to the northeast, Atlantic to the southeast, and Gloucester to the south. Camden County is densely populated with many interconnecting highways, institutions of higher learning, and industry. The Camden County Police Department has county-wide jurisdiction.
