Jackson County is located along the western border of Missouri, and with an estimated population of 698,895, is the second most populous county in the state. Jackson County became part of the newly admitted state of Missouri in 1821, and was organized as Jackson County on December 15, 1826. It was named for Andrew Jackson, the U.S. Senator from Tennessee, and later President of the United States. Jackson County is bordered by Clay County; Ray County; Lafayette County; Johnson County; Cass County; Johnson County, Kansas; and Wyandotte County, Kansas. The Missouri River comprises Jackson County's northern border and has historically been a major traveling point for American river travel. There are 18 cities, towns, and villages in Jackson County. The city of Independence was originally designated as the county seat; however nearby Kansas City eventually became the county seat and center of the county government. In addition to being the county seat, Kansas City is the largest city in Missouri with an estimated population of 488,943. It is the central city of the Kansas City metropolitan area, which straddles the Kansas-Missouri border. The federal government is the largest employer in the Kansas City metropolitan area. More than 146 federal agencies maintain a presence there. From 2007 to 2017, the downtown residential population in Kansas City quadrupled and continues to grow. The city is known for its long tradition of jazz music, its culture, its cuisine (Kansas City barbeque), and its craft breweries.
