The most populous county in Kansas is Johnson County, located along the Kansas-Missouri border on the east side of the state. Kansas City, Missouri's proximity to Johnson County contributes largely to the population growth of the county as part of the Kansas City Metropolitan Area. In 1855, Johnson County was established as one of the first counties in the newly organized Kansas Territory. The county was named for Thomas Johnson, a Methodist missionary, who founded the Shawnee Methodist Mission. The Kansas River forms a portion of the northwest boundary of the county. The other boundaries include Wyandotte County; Miami County; Franklin County; Douglas County; Leavenworth County; Jackson County, Missouri; and Cass County, Missouri. Johnson County has 7 townships, and 20 cities with the city of Olathe being the county seat, and the fourth-most populous city in Kansas. The largest city in Johnson County, and the second largest city in Kansas, is the city of Overland Park. The city has an estimated population of 191,278, and has a reputation as an affordable and family friendly community. Overland Park has been named, by a number of news organizations, for its favorable living conditions including BusinessWeek's ranking of the city as one of "The Best Places to Raise Your Kids."
