Cabell County, is West Virginia's fourth most populous county, but only its tenth largest by area. Most of the population is in the City of Huntington, its largest municipality and county seat. There are no other cities and only one town and one village in the county; even Huntington is partly in Wayne County. Cabell County was formed in 1809 and is named after William Cabell, the governor of Virginia from 1805 to 1809 (note that West Virginia was part of Virginia until 1861). Its neighbors are the West Virginia counties of Mason to the northeast, Putnam to the east, Lincoln to the southeast, and Wayne to the southwest. Across the Ohio River to the west lies Lawrence County in the state of Ohio.
