Formed in 1897, Greenwood County's boundaries are Laurens County on the north, Newberry County on the northeast, Edgefield and Saluda Counties on the southeast, McCormick County on the southwest, and Abbeville County on the west. It is named after Greenwood, its largest city and county seat. Greenwood is the only city; the county also includes four towns and a few unincorporated communities. At the time of its creation, Greenwood County's economy was based on cotton plantations with slave labor. Textile manufacturing dominated the economy from the county's founding until the mid-20th century. Although agriculture is still important, it boasts a diverse manufacturing economy today.
