Cuyahoga County, named after the river that flows through it, was formed in 1807. It is the second most populous county in Ohio, after Franklin County. It is also the second largest county in Ohio by area, after Ashtabula County - although over half of its area is occupied by Lake Erie, which also forms its northern border. Bordering counties include Lorain on the west, Medina and Summit on the south, and Geauga and Lake on the east. Cuyahoga County’s largest city is Cleveland, which is also the county seat. Cleveland’s location on Lake Erie contributes to its status as a manufacturing center. Cleveland is also home to many museums including the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Cuyahoga County includes 38 cities, 19 villages, and two townships. It is also home to over a dozen colleges and universities and professional football, baseball, and basketball teams.
