Monroe County is on the southern shore of Lake Ontario in the western part of New York State. It was formed from portions of Genesee and Ontario Counties in 1821 and is named for James Montgomery, the 5th President of the United States. Rochester, the county seat, is the only large city; its population is 208,046. With Lake Ontario as its northern border, Monroe County is surrounded by Orleans and Genesee Counties on the west, Livingston and Ontario Counties on the south, and Wayne County on the east. Rochester became a hotbed of inventions, giving rise to iconic brands such as Kodak, Western Union, Bausch & Lomb, and Xerox. More recently, Monroe County has become the home of many high-tech startups, especially in the fields of photographic processing and imaging. Monroe County is host to ten colleges and universities, as well as 20 towns and 10 villages.
