Mecklenburg County is located in the southwestern portion of North Carolina. As of 2015, its estimated population was 1,034,070, making it the most populous county in North Carolina. The county was formed on November 6, 1762. A large part of the south and western portion of Mecklenburg County extended into an area that would later become part of South Carolina. Determining the final boundaries between North and South Carolina was a decade long process. Mecklenburg County's Declaration of Independence was signed on March 20, 1775, making it one of the first portions of the Thirteen Colonies to declare its independence from Great Britain. The county is named after Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, queen of the United Kingdom. Mecklenburg County is bordered by Iredell County; Cabarrus County; Union County; Gaston County; Catawba County; Lincoln County; Lancaster County, South Carolina; and York County, South Carolina. Mecklenburg County is home to six Fortune 500 companies. It contains seven municipalities including the city of Charlotte, the county seat, and the largest city in North Carolina. Its 2017 estimated population of 859,035, makes it the 17th most populous city in the United States, and the 2nd largest city in the southeastern U.S., behind Jacksonville, Florida. The Charlotte metropolitan area ranks 22nd in the U.S with a 2016 population of 2,474,314. Charlotte is the major center in the U.S. motorsports industry with approximately 75% of the NASCAR industry's race teams based nearby. Charlotte is also home to two major sports teams, the NFL Carolina Panthers, and the NBA Charlotte Hornets.
