Forsyth County is the fourth-most populous county in North Carolina with a population of 365,298. It was formed in 1849 from Stokes County, and was named for Colonel Benjamin Forsyth, who was killed in the War of 1812. The county is located in the outer Appalachian mountains, and is bordered by Stokes County; Guilford County; Davidson County, Davie County; and Yadkin County. In 1875, Richard Joshua Reynolds established his tobacco business in the city of Winston, and the company's growth into one of the nation's largest corporations spurred the development of both the city and Forsyth County. There are 21 municipalities in Forsyth County, some of which are partially located in adjacent counties. The city of Winston-Salem is the county capital, and the largest city in the county with a population of 242,203. It is regarded as a major cultural and artistic center in North Carolina. In 2017, the New York Times, and the Wall St. Journal ranked the city as the second-most livable downtown in the United States.
