Worcester County was formed in 1731. Although there were several attempts to split the county into two counties, it remains the largest county in Massachusetts by land area. It is bordered on the northeast by Middlesex County, on the southeast by Norfolk County, on the northwest by Franklin County, on the west by Hampshire County, and on the southwest by Hampden County. Its northern boundary is shared by the New Hampshire counties of Cheshire and Hillsborough. Its southern border is shared by Providence County in Rhode Island and the Connecticut counties of Tolland and Windham. Worcester County's largest city, Worcester, is the second largest city in both Massachusetts and New England. Worcester County has four other cities and 55 towns. Like most of the counties in Massachusetts, it has no county government; its government was abolished in 1998 and its governmental functions were transferred to various state agencies.
