Henry County was formed in 1822 and named for Patrick Henry, famous for his "Give me liberty or give me death" speech preceding the American Revolution. It is largely agricultural; its neighbors are Delaware County on the north, Randolph County on the northeast, Wayne County on the east, Fayette County on the southeast, Rush County on the south, Hancock County on the southwest, and Madison County on the northwest. New Castle, with 18.000 residents, is Henry County's largest and only city, and its county seat. The county has 15 small towns and 13 townships. Henry County is the main setting for Ross Lockridge, Jr.'s Raintree County, considered to be the "Great American Novel" by many critics. It is also the home of the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame and the New Castle Fieldhouse, the largest high school gymnasium in the United States.
