Tuscaloosa County was formed in 1818 and built its economy on cotton growing and processing via the plantation-slave system. Agriculture today is more diverse, and industry is also a major economic sector. Many former slaves left the area in the early part of the 20th century in response to violence, discrimination, and segregation made legal by "Jim Crow" laws. Before the Civil War, slaves made up nearly half of the county's population; today, African-Americans are less than a third of the total population. Tuscaloosa County has two cities and seven towns. The largest city and county seat is Tuscaloosa, Alabama's fifth largest city with a population of about 90,000. Tuscaloosa served as the capital of Alabama from 1826 to 1846; today, it is the industrial and economic center of western Alabama. Tuscaloosa County is bordered by the counties of Walker on the northeast, Jefferson on the east, Bibb on the southeast, Hale on the south, Greene on the southwest, Pickens on the west, and Fayette on the northwest.
