Hudson County, New Jersey Free Public Records Directory

Hudson County was formed from adjacent counties in 1840 and is named for Henry Hudson, the English sea captain who explored much of the area in the early 17^th Century. It the smallest by area and 4^th most populous county in New Jersey, making it the state's most densely populated county. It is bordered by Bergen County on the north, and Essex and Union Counties on the west. Its other boundaries are with counties in New York State: across the Kill Van Kull waterway to the south is Staten Island (Richmond County), across the Hudson River to the east is Manhattan (New York County), and across Upper Bay to the southeast is Brooklyn (Kings County). Hudson County is part of the New York City metropolitan area and is connected to Manhattan by the Lincoln and Holland Tunnels, and with Staten Island by the Bayonne Bridge. The county seat is Jersey City; Hudson County's 12 other municipalities include the cities of Bayonne, Union City, and Hoboken. Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty lie with Hudson County's borders.
