About Contractor License Records
All states that license contractors keep records of these license holders. Most states require a license for any contractor bidding on "significant work", but a license in one state does not automatically mean it transfers to another state. Of the states that require licenses, many will allow for online searching, usually by individual or business name, but searching by specialty may also be available. Results may include license status, including the type of license and whether it is active. Some searches will also return complaint information including any results of such complaints.
Other states that require licenses may not have online search capability. In these circumstances, one must contact the appropriate agency by phone, in writing or in person.
