Middlesex County lies at the center of New Jersey's population and is the second most populous county in the state. It is bordered by Union County on the north, Monmouth County on the southeast, Mercer County on the southwest, Somerset County on the northwest. Its northeastern boundary is with New York's Staten Island (Richmond County), which lies across the Arthur Kill waterway and is connected by the Outerbridge Crossing. New Brunswick, the county seat, has 55,000 residents and is the county's largest city, although several townships have higher populations; Edison and Woodbridge Townships each have over 99,000 residents. The county has 3 cities, 12 boroughs, and 10 townships overall. Middlesex County was founded in 1683 as part of the British province of East Jersey. It is relatively flat and is bisected from west to east by the Raritan River, which empties into Raritan Bay.
