Montgomery County was formed in 1784 out of Philadelphia County. Today, it is a densely populated Philadelphia suburb in the south and central portions, while farms still occupy the north. Norristown is the county seat, while Lower Merion Township with 57,825 residents is the largest municipality. As a mostly suburban county, Montgomery has no cities; it has 6 home rule municipalities (former boroughs and townships), 23 boroughs, and 34 townships. It is also home to the Valley Forge National Historical Park. Montgomery County is surrounded by Philadelphia and Delaware Counties to the south, Bucks County to the northeast, Lehigh County to the north, Berks County to the northwest, and Chester County to the southwest.
