Medina County was originally part of the Connecticut Western Reserve, territory claimed by the State of Connecticut and later purchased by a land development company. The county was established in 1812 and fully organized in 1818. Medina County is mostly rural. Brunswick, the largest city, has a population of about 34,000. Medina, the county seat, has a population of about 26,000. The county is home to two other small cities, 7 villages, and 17 townships. Medina County is bordered by Cuyahoga County to the northeast, Summit County to the east, Wayne County to the south, Ashland County to the southwest, and Lorain County to the northwest. The county's most famous resident is Amos Root, who developed modern beekeeping methods in the mid-19th century and made beehive manufacturing the City of Medina's largest employer.
