The third most populous county in North Carolina is Guilford County with a population of 536,953. The North Carolina colonial legislature organized the county in 1771. It was named for Francis North, Earl of Guilford, father of Frederick North, Lord North, British Prime Minister from 1770 to 1782. Five counties border Guilford County, and they are Rockingham County; Alamance County; Randolph County; Davidson County; and Forsyth County. The history and culture of Guilford County is among the richest of any North Carolina county. The important Revolutionary War battle at Guilford Courthouse took place in March 1781. There are 13 cities and towns, and 18 townships within Guilford County. The largest city and county seat of Guilford County is the city of Greensboro. With an estimated population of 287,027, the city is the 3rd largest city in North Carolina. The city of Greensboro has an active and diverse arts community with a number of garden and museum attractions. It also has many major institutions of higher education including Guilford College (1837), University of North Carolina at Greensboro (1891), and others.
