Like most counties in Massachusetts, Middlesex County has no county government. County government in 8 of Massachusetts' 14 counties was abolished between 1997 and 2000; those counties' boundaries are now primarily geographic. Middlesex County's government was abolished in 1997 and its governmental functions were transferred to various state agencies. Middlesex County is bordered by Essex County on the northeast, Suffolk County on the southeast, Norfolk County on the south, Worcester County on the west, and Hillsborough County in New Hampshire on the north. It was formed in 1643 and is now the most populous county in both Massachusetts and New England. It includes 13 cities and 41 towns. The largest cities are Lowell at 105,860 residents and Cambridge at 104,322 residents. Both of those cities served as county seats when Middlesex County had a county government.
