About Birth Records in Rhode Island

Rhode Island vital records are managed by the Rhode Island Department of Health Office of Vital Records. Rhode Island vital records are confidential and can only be obtained by those with a 'direct and tangible interest,' such as the registrant, immediate family member, guardian, authorized agent, those requiring information for the determination or protection of a personal or property right, or those with a court order.

Copies of vital records can be obtained in person or by mail. Copies of birth records for events that occurred less than 100 years ago can also be obtained by the city or town where the event occurred through the city or town clerk.
