Sevier County, Tennessee Free Public Records Directory

Sevier County was formed in 1794 and is named for John Sevier, the first Governor of Tennessee. Much of the county's territory is mountainous, so the plantation system never took hold and few residents owned slaves. Although Tennessee joined the Confederacy during the Civil War, Sevier County remained pro-Union and was a hotbed of pro-Union guerilla activity. Sevier County's economy was based on subsistence agriculture until 1930, when the Great Smoky Mountains National Park was created. The park is the country's most-visited national park, and Sevier County's economy is now based on tourism. The county has three cities and one town. Sevierville is the county seat and largest city, with a population of 16,000. The cities of Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge are major tourist attractions; Pigeon Forge is home to Dollywood an amusement park owned in part county native Dolly Parton. Adjoining Tennessee counties are Cocke on the east, Jefferson on the north, Knox on the northwest, and Blount on the west.
