Richland County was formed in 1813, but it was reduced to its current size in 1846 when it gave up some eastern portions to help form the new county of Ashland. Today, Richland County's borders are made up of Ashland County on the east, Knox County on the south, Morrow County on the southwest, Crawford County on the west, and Huron County on the north. Mansfield, with a population of about 47,000, is the county seat and largest city. Richland County has 3 other small cities, 7 villages, and 18 townships. The county is named for its rich soil, and it remains mostly agricultural today. It is also home to one of Ohio's few ski areas, a sports-car racetrack, and an abandoned prison that served as the site of several motion pictures.
