Nassau County is a densely populated suburban county on Long Island, situated between Queens County (the Borough of Queens, part of New York City) on the west and Suffolk County on the east. It is bordered on the north by Long Island Sound and on the south by the Atlantic Ocean. Many of its residents commute to jobs in New York City, thanks to its proximity and robust transportation infrastructure. Nassau County has the highest per capita income of any county in the United States; it is also the most expensive county in which to live. In addition to its easy access to New York City, Nassau County's many beaches, bays, and harbors make it a desirable place to live. The county hosts two cities and three towns, but within those three towns are 71 villages. Hempstead, the largest town at over 750,000 residents, includes all or part of 22 villages. Because village boundaries can span town boundaries, the county seat of Mineola is partly in the Town of Hempstead but mostly in the Town of North Hempstead. Nassau County was originally part of Queens and became a separate county in 1899 after the western portion of Queens became a borough of New York City.
