Erie County, near the western end of New York State, is named for Lake Erie, which makes up its western border along with the Canadian province of Ontario. It is bordered on the south by Chautauqua and Cattaraugus Counties, on the east by Genesee and Wyoming Counties, and on the north by Niagara County. Buffalo, the county seat, is also its largest city at 259,902 residents. There are no other large cities, although to Town of Amherst in the Buffalo suburbs has a population of 122,366. The county is home to 3 cities, 25 towns, and 16 villages. European settlement did not begin until after the Revolutionary War. By 1800, all of western New York was part of Ontario County. As the population grew along with railroads and industry in the 19th Century, western Ontario County was split into smaller counties; Erie County was formed in 1821. The northern part of Erie County is relatively flat; the southern part includes the most northwestern extent of the Appalachian Mountain foothills and boasts the county’s highest elevation at 1,940 feet near the Town of Sardinia.
