Genesee County is the fifth-most populous county in Michigan. The county was organized in 1836, and was named after Genesee County, New York. Six counties border Genesee County, they are Tuscola County, Lapeer County, Oakland County, Livingston County, Shiawassee County, and Saginaw County. Most of the county is very flat, with the southern end hilly. There are 16 municipalities, consisting of cities and villages, and 17 townships within the county. The largest city, and county seat, is the city of Flint. It is located along the Flint River, 66 miles northwest of Detroit, Michigan. Flint was known as an automobile manufacturing powerhouse for General Motors up until the early 1980s. Between 1978 and 2010, General Motors downsized its workforce from 80,000 to under 8,000, causing a deep economic depression in the city. A number of emergency steps have been taken in the pursuing years. Commercially, local organizations have attempted to pool their resources in order to perform extensive renovations in various areas of the city. On November 3, 2015, the city of Flint residents elected their first female mayor.
