With an estimated population of 105,543, Hardin County is the 6th most populous county in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. It is also Kentucky's 4th largest county by area. Established in 1792 from land given by the adjoining Nelson County, Hardin County was the 15th county formed in Kentucky. It is named for Colonel John Hardin, a Continental Army Officer during the American Revolutionary War. Louisville-Jefferson County; Bullitt County; Nelson County; LaRue County; Hart County; Grayson County; Breckinridge County; Meade County; and Harrison County, Indiana border Hardin County. The adjacent Fort Knox Military Installation largely dominates the economy of Hardin County. The new Army Human Resource Center, the largest office building in the state, opened at Fort Knox in May 2010. The new center employs nearly 4,300 soldiers and civilians. Of the seven cities in Hardin County, the city of Elizabethtown is the largest, and also the county seat. County records were destroyed by fires in 1864 and again in 1932. The present courthouse in Elizabethtown dates from 1934. Elizabethtown is one of two larger cities along Interstate 65 between Louisville, Kentucky and Nashville, Tennessee, the other being the city of Bowling Green, Kentucky.
