Ripley County was formed in 1816 and is named for Eleazer Whitlock Ripley, a general in the War of 1812. It is primarily agricultural; its only city, Batesville, has a population of only about 6,000 and is shared with Franklin County. Surrounding counties include Franklin on the north, Dearborn on the east, Ohio on the east-southeast, Switzerland at the southeast tip, Jefferson on the south, Jennings on the west, and Decatur on the northwest. The county seat is the town of Versailles, which is named after the Palace of Versailles in France and has a population of 2,000. Ripley County has five other small towns and many unincorporated settlements. Versailles State Park is Indiana's second largest. Milan, another town shared with Franklin County, is the home of the state champion small-town high school basketball team that inspired the movie Hoosiers.
