Carroll County is a county located along the Georgia-Alabama state line in the northwestern section of the state of Georgia. It has an estimated population of 117,182, making it the 20th most populous county in Georgia. Carroll County's boundaries were created by the Georgia General Assembly on June 9, 1826. However, it wasn't named until December 14, 1826, when it was named after Charles Carroll of Carrollton, the last surviving signer of the U.S. Declaration of Independence. As the population of the county increased, the county was gradually divided into four other Georgia counties. The current counties that border Carroll County are Paulding County; Douglas County; Fulton County; Coweta County; Heard County; Haralson County; Randolph County, Alabama; and Cleburne County, Alabama. Carroll County was the location of Georgia's first gold rush. It has 8 municipalities which include 6 cities and 2 towns. The city of Carrollton is the largest city in the county, and the county seat. Downtown Carrollton was laid out in 1830, with a central feature being the town square, later named Adamson Square. Today, Adamson Square is the location of many of Carrollton's events. The oldest bookstore in Georgia, and the county's oldest business, is Horton's Books & Gifts. Founded in 1892, the bookstore is still in its original location on the Square.
