Crawford County, with a population of 62,267, is the 12th most populous county in Arkansas. The county was formed on October 18, 1820, from the former Lovely County, and Indian Territory. It was named for William H. Crawford, the U.S. Secretary of War in 1815. Crawford County is located largely within the Ozarks with the southern boundary being the Arkansas River. The counties that border Crawford County include Washington County; Madison County; Franklin County; Sebastian County; Adair County, Oklahoma; Sequoyah County, Oklahoma; and Le Flore County, Oklahoma. Crawford County has 25 townships, 7 cities and 2 towns. The largest city in the county, and the county seat, is the city of Van Buren. Located on the Arkansas River, the city began as a port and trade center. It was also the starting point for prospectors of the 1849 gold rush. Today, being located at the intersection of two major interstate highways, the city is home to many of the large corporations in the state including poultry producer Tyson Foods.
