Jackson County, in the mountainous northeastern corner of Alabama, was formed in 1819 from land acquired by treaty from the Cherokee Indians. The terrain was not suitable to plantations, so small farms dominated the area and few families owned slaves. Agriculture was overtaken by industry as the main economic activity in the mid-20th century after hydroelectric power reached the area. Jackson County has 3 cities and 10 towns. Scottsboro, on the Tennessee River, has about 14,000 residents; it is the county's largest city and the county seat. The Tennessee counties of Franklin and Marion border Jackson County on the north. Dade County in Georgia forms the eastern border. Adjacent Alabama Counties are DeKalb on the southeast, Marshall on the southwest, and Madison on the west. Russell Cave National Monument, in the northeastern part of Jackson County, is an important archeological site.
