Area: 607 sq. miles
County Seat: Beckley
Area Code(s): 304
Time Zone: Eastern

Raleigh County was formed in 1850 from part of Fayette County, which at the time was part of Virginia. The county is named after early colonial leader Sir Walter Raleigh. Its borders are formed by Kanawha County on the north, Fayette County on the northeast, Summers County on the east, Mercer County on the southeast, Wyoming County on the southwest, and Boone County on the northwest. Beckley is the county seat and only city; there are also three towns in the county. Coal mining has long been a part of Raleigh County's economy, and is still a factor despite coal's decline. The county includes the New River Gorge National River, a recreation mecca. The river is crossed by the New River Gorge Bridge, the second-longest single arch bridge in the world. The bridge itself is home to Bridge Day, an annual festival that includes thousands of spectators and hundreds of BASE jumpers and rappellers. See the categories below for a multitude of public records and documents, including birth records, restaurant inspections, and jail records. [1]
