Located in the extreme north central portion of Texas is Wichita County. The county adjoins Tillman County, Oklahoma; Cotton County, Oklahoma; Clay County; Archer County; Wilbarger County; and Baylor County. Wichita County was established by the Texas legislature on February 1, 1858, from the Cooke Land District, and was named for the Wichita Indians. Wichita County was overwhelmingly rural and agricultural during its first decade. In 1882, the Fort Worth and Denver City Railroad reached the tiny settlement of Wichita Falls. The extension of the rail lines into the county greatly facilitated growth. In addition to rail connections, the discovery of oil played an important and lasting role in Wichita County's growth. There are six municipalities in the county with Wichita Falls being the largest city, and county seat. In 1886, a flood destroyed the falls on the Wichita River for which the city was named. An artificial waterfall was later constructed next to the river in the City's Lucy Park allowing visitors to enjoy the falls.
