Atascosa County is a county in the Rio Grande Plain region of south central Texas. It was formed in 1856 from the adjoining Bexar County, and is named for the Atascosa River. Atascosa County is bordered by Bexar County, Wilson County, Karnes County, Live Oak County, McMullen County, La Salle County, Frio County, and Medina County. The county's 1,221 sq. miles is mostly level to rolling land with approximately 50% considered prime farmland. During the fall and winter seasons, numerous hunters are attracted to the county. Atascosa County calls itself the "birthplace of the cowboys." There are six municipalities in the county, with the city of Jourdanton, the county seat, and the city of Pleasanton, the largest city, with a population of 8,934. The city of Pleasanton honors its cowboy heritage with the "Mr. Cowboy" sculpture in front of its city hall.
