General information about Williamson County

Population: 146,935
Area: 583 sq. miles
County Seat: Franklin
Area Code(s): 615
Time Zone: Central

Williamson County, formed in 1799, is named for Hugh Williamson, a North Carolina politician who signed the U.S. Constitution. Rich soil and slave labor made it a prosperous farming area, but the county was devastated during the Civil War. It is home to the largest private Confederate cemetery in the United States. Beginning in 1880, many black residents migrated to northern cities for work and to escape Jim Crow discrimination and violence. In the second half of the 20th century, the population rebounded as the northern part of the county became a suburb of Nashville. Today, although the southern part of the county is still agricultural, Williamson County is one of the wealthiest counties in the nation. Franklin, with 75,000 residents, is the largest city and county seat. The county has three other cities and two towns. Bordering counties are Cheatham and Davidson on the north, Rutherford on the east, Marshall on the southeast, Maury on the south, and Dickson on the northwest.
