Sumner County was formed in 1789, while the area was still part of North Carolina; Tennessee became a state in 1796. Sumner County is named for Revolutionary War hero General Jethro Sumner. The county is part of Tennessee's northern border with Kentucky; across Sumner County's border on the north are the Kentucky counties of Allen and Simpson. The surrounding Tennessee counties are Macon on the east, Trousdale on the southeast, Wilson on the south, Davidson on the southwest, and Robertson on the west. The Cumberland River traces the border with Davidson and Trousdale Counties. Hendersonville is the largest city, with a population of 57,000. Located only 18 miles from Nashville in Davidson County, Hendersonville has been the home of many county & western starts, including Johnny Cash. Gallatin, the county seat, has a population of 36,000. Sumner County has five other cities and one town. During the Civil War, the county was occupied by Union troops.
