Knox County was formed in 1792 and named for Henry Knox, a Revolutionary War general and the first United States Secretary of War. Bordering counties are Union to the north, Grainger to the northeast, Jefferson to the east, Sevier to the southeast, Blount to the south, Loudon to the southwest, Roane to the west, and Anderson to the northwest. Parts of Knox County later became Anderson, Blount, and Union Counties. Today, Knox County is the third most populous in Tennessee. Knoxville, the county seat and largest city with a population of 186,000, is the third most populous city in Tennessee. Knox County is in a valley of the Appalachian Mountains that was unsuitable to plantation agriculture. Like many counties in East Tennessee, few residents of Knox County owned slaves in the 1860's. The county attempted to secede from Tennessee and join the Union when Tennessee voted to join the Confederacy in 1861. In 1863, Union forces took control of the county and occupied it for the rest of the Civil War. Knoxville is the county's only city; the county also has one town. Knox County is famous for its quarries that produced marble used in many monuments in the United States and Canada.
