Greene County, Tennessee Free Public Records Directory

The area known today as Greene County was leased from the Cherokee Indians by pioneer settlers in the early 1770s. By 1775, it was part of an autonomous region called the Washington District, which was allied with the original 13 Colonies. During the Revolutionary War, the Washington District was annexed by North Carolina. Greene County was formed in 1783 from part of Washington County, North Carolina. In 1784, dissatisfied with North Carolina rule, the area including Greene County formed the extra-legal State of Franklin and lobbied unsuccessfully to be admitted as a new state. North Carolina regained control of the area in 1789, and then ceded it to the federal government. In 1796, the area became part of the new State of Tennessee. Greene County has one city and three towns. The town of Greenville, which had been the capital of the State of Franklin, is the county seat and largest municipality, with a population of 15,000. Adjacent counties include the North Carolina county of Madison on the south and the Tennessee counties of Cocke on the southwest, Hamblen on the west, Hawkins on the north, Washington on the east, and Unicoi on the southeast. Frontiersman Davy Crockett is Greene County's most famous resident.
