Davidson County is the 2nd most populous county in Tennessee with a population of 678,889. Davidson County is the oldest county in the 41-county region of Middle Tennessee. The North Carolina legislature created the county in 1783, and named it in honor of William Lee Davidson, a North Carolina general. Davidson County is bordered by Robertson County, Sumner County, Wilson County, Rutherford County, Williamson County, and Cheatham County. The Cumberland River flows from east to west through the middle of the county. In 1963, the city of Nashville and the Davidson County government merged so the county government is now known as the “Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County” or “Metro Nashville.” All of Davidson County is encompassed by the consolidated government; however several municipalities that were incorporated before consolidation retain some autonomy as independent municipalities. The city, known as the “home of country music,” is the home to the Big Four Record labels, as well as numerous independent labels. Since the 1960s, Nashville has been the second largest music production center in the U.S. In recent times, many civic and infrastructure projects are being planned, in progress, or recently completed. Nashville has been described as a “southern boomtown,” with it having the 3rd fastest growing economy in the U.S. as of 2017.
