Horry County is the largest county in South Carolina by area, and the fourth most populous. At the time of its creation in 1801, it was isolated by its many rivers and swamps. Today, thanks to modern infrastructure and its location on the coast, it is a popular destination for recreation and retirement. Pronounced "oh-ree", it is named after Captain Peter Horry, a hero of the Revolutionary War. On Horry County's northeastern border lie the North Carolina counties of Brunswick, Columbus, and Robeson. Its South Carolina neighbors are Dillon County on the northwest, Marion County on the west, and Georgetown County on the southwest. Its eastern border is the Atlantic Ocean. The county seat is Conway, on the Waccamaw River in the center of the state. The largest city is Myrtle Beach on the Atlantic Ocean. Horry County is home to two other cities, four towns, and numerous unincorporated communities. Law enforcement is handled by the Horry County Police Department, the only county-wide police department in South Carolina.
