Mercer County is about an hour north of Pittsburgh and shares its western boundary with the Ohio counties of Mahoning and Trumbull. Surrounding Pennsylvania counties include Crawford on the north, Venango on the east, Butler on the southeast, and Lawrence on the south. Formed in 1800, Mercer County is home to three cities, 14 boroughs, and 28 townships. The Borough of Mercer is the county seat; the City of Hermitage is the largest municipality. The county is nearly half farmland, but most residents are employed in health care, manufacturing, and retail. At one time, it was a major iron and steel producer. A local attraction is the Wendell Arthur Forge, and last remaining working forge in Pennsylvania.
