Formed in 1798, Ross County is home to hundreds of earthwork enclosures and mounds built by the prehistoric Hopewell Culture. Ross County is named for Senator James Ross of Pennsylvania. Its county seat and only city, Chillicothe, was the capital of Ohio from statehood in 1803 until 1810, and again from 1812 to 1816. Local attractions include the Hopewell Culture National Historical Park. Ross County has 6 villages and 16 townships.
