Area: 415 sq. miles
County Seat: Youngstown
Area Code(s): 330

Mahoning County's name comes from a Native American word for "salt lick". It was formed in 1846 when the large counties of Columbiana and Trumbull were reorganized into several smaller counties. Today, Columbiana County forms Mahoning's southern border and Trumbull County forms Mahoning's northern border. Portage County on the northwest and Stark County on the southwest round out Mahoning's bordering Ohio counties. Mahoning County's eastern border is made up of the Pennsylvania counties of Lawrence and Mercer. Youngstown, the county seat, is the only major city, although the county includes 6 smaller cities, 7 villages, and 14 townships. Mahoning County's economy is struggling and its population has declined in recent years due to a loss of manufacturing jobs. Although some industry remains in Youngstown, most of the county is rural.
