Franklin County is the most populous county in Ohio; and Columbus, its county seat, is also the most populous city in Ohio. Columbus is also the state capital and the second most populous city in the Midwest, after Chicago. Franklin County also includes 15 other cities, 10 villages, and 17 townships. It was formed in 1803 and named after Benjamin Franklin. Its economy is diverse and includes manufacturing, finance, and transportation. Franklin County is home to five universities and colleges, including Ohio State University. It is bordered by Delaware county on the north, Union County on the northwest, Madison County on the west, Pickaway County on the south, Fairfield County on the southeast, and Licking County on the east.
