New York County is coterminous with the Borough of Manhattan, which is one of the "Five Boroughs" of New York City. It is the most densely populated of the Five Boroughs, and the most densely populated county in the United States. Bordering counties include Bronx County (Borough of the Bronx) to the north, Queens County (Borough of Queens) and Kings County (Borough of Brooklyn) to the east, and Richmond County (Borough of Staten Island) to the south. The Borough of Manhattan occupies all of Manhattan Island and the neighborhood of Marble Hill across the Harlem River to the north. The island is surrounded by the Hudson River, East River, Harlem River, and Upper Bay. Across the Hudson River to the west lie the counties of Bergen and Hudson in New Jersey. Manhattan does not have a county government; each of the Five Boroughs is governed by the Mayor and City Council of the City of New York, although each borough has some limited self-government. Founded by the Dutch as New Amsterdam in 1626, it was traded to England in 1674 for an island in Indonesia. Manhattan became a borough of New York City in 1898, and today it is the world's leading financial center.
