Scotland County is a county located along the southwest border of North Carolina. The counties bordering Scotland County consist of Hoke County; Robeson County; Richmond County; Moore County; and Marlboro County, South Carolina. Scotland County was formed in 1899 from the adjoining Richmond County. It was named for the ancestral home of its many Scottish settlers. Thousands of Scottish settlers, during the eighteenth century, greatly influenced its growth and development. The county is home to a number of historic sites including St. Andrews University, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Scotland County is home to four towns and one city, the city of Laurinburg, also its county seat. The St. Andrews Presbyterian College was established in the city of Laurinburg in 1958, and later changed its name to St. Andrews University in 2011. The Scottish Heritage Center was established at the University in 1989.
