Hennepin County, with a population of 1,232,483, is the most populous county in Minnesota, and the 35th most populous county in the United States. The Minnesota Territorial Legislature created Hennepin County in 1852. It is named in honor of the 17th-century explorer Father Louis Hennepin. Hennepin County is bordered by Anoka County, Ramsey County, Dakota County, Scott County, Carver County, Wright County, and Sherburne County. Hennepin County's major economic centers are downtown Minneapolis and Bloomington. The largest shopping mall in the U.S. is the Mall of America, located in the city of Bloomington. There are 45 cities in Hennepin County, with Minneapolis being the county seat, and largest city in Minnesota, with an estimated population of 422,331. The Twin Cities metropolitan area, consisting of Minneapolis, Saint Paul, and its suburbs, contain about 3.6 million people, and is the 2nd largest economic center in the Midwest, behind Chicago. Besides being known for its business center, Minneapolis is also known for its sports, performing arts, and cuisine. It is home to five professional sport teams including men's basketball, women's basketball, baseball, soccer, and football. Minneapolis is also home to award-winning restaurants and chefs, and is also the third largest theater market in the U.S., after New York City and Chicago, Illinois.
