Oakland County is located on the east side of Michigan, northwest of Detroit. It is part of the Detroit metropolitan area, and has a population of 1,202,362, making it the 2nd most populous county in Michigan. The county was founded in 1819 at twice its current size. As the population grew, other counties were organized from its original land area. Oakland County is bordered by Lapeer County, Genesee County, Macomb County, Wayne County, Washtenaw County, and Livingston County. All three automotive companies, General Motors, Ford and Chrysler are major employers within southeast Michigan and have a significant presence in Oakland County. Oakland County has shared in the recent economic hardships of the automotive industry; however it has fared better than Detroit and Flint, as its economy is more diverse and less reliant on manufacturing jobs. Oakland County is also home to Oakland University, a large public research university. There are 62 cities, townships and villages in Oakland County. The county seat of Oakland County is the city of Pontiac, located about 12 miles north and slightly west of the Detroit city limits. The city of Troy is the largest city in Oakland County with a population of 83,813. It is the 11th largest city in Michigan by population. Troy is located in the northern suburbs of metropolitan Detroit, and has become a business and shopping destination with numerous office centers and major corporations. In 2008, Business Week ranked the city of Troy as the fourth most affordable city in the United States.
