Although Hendricks County is the tenth largest of Indiana's 92 counties, it has no cities. It does have 11 towns and 12 townships. Only three towns have more than 10,000 residents: Plainfield at 33,000, Brownsburg at 25,000, and Avon at 17,000. The county seat is Danville, with 9,000 residents. These four towns are suburbs of Indianapolis, which lies just over Hendricks County's eastern border with Marion County. The western portion of the county still hosts some agriculture, but retail and manufacturing lead the county's economy today. Hendricks County's other neighbors are Morgan County on the south, Putnam County on the west, Montgomery County on the northwest, and Boone County on the north. Hendricks County was formed in 1824 and named for William Hendricks, who was Indiana's governor at the time.
